Finally got a moment of downtime?
These are some of your favourite Sisterhood Works podcast episodes from the year that was. So if you missed them first time round, now is the perfect time to catch up on your listening, and get ahead for 2022.
1. Candice Brathwaite On Her Greatest Life Lessons
We kicked off season four of Sisterhood Works with this episode for a reason. Candice is the wickedly funny, clever, and insightful force behind Make Motherhood Diverse, and in this episode we discuss her latest book Sista Sister. It is a compilation of essays about all the things Candice wishes someone had talked to her about when she was a young Black girl growing up in London. From family and money to Black hair and fashion, as well as relationships between people of different races and colourism, it’s written in Candice's trademark straight-talking, warm and funny style. 2. Niomi Smart On Self Care & Sustainable Living
She may be one of the UK most’s influential content creators, but despite her millions of followers, her namesake vegan skincare company Smart Skin, and her covetable lifestyle, this conversation with Niomi Smart is as warm and friendly as she is. She takes us through her journey, from starting out on YouTube when it was still about funny cat videos, to becoming an incredibly successful entrepreneur and businesswoman. Listen to the episode here.
3. Helena Lee On A Decade Long Career At Harper’s BAZAAR
What does a decade long career at one of the world’s most glamorous fashion titles look like? That’s what we ask Helena Lee, the acting deputy editor of Harper's Bazaar and founder of East Side Voices, a platform she launched out of frustration with the lack of visibility that East Asians and Southeast Asians have. Her debut book will also be published in 2022, and in this conversation, we talk about what the career of a writer looks like, as well as sisterhood, ambition, and starting over when you realise you might not be on the right path. Listen to the episode here.
4. Supermodel Ashley Graham on Being A Change Maker
Ashley Graham is many things. Yes, she’s a supermodel – my gosh is she a supermodel - but she’s also a powerful role model for all women. According to the fashion industry, she’s also plus size (and just so we’re clear – the outstated and frankly insulting label of plus size refers to any woman who is a size US 8 to 16). She’s a businesswoman. She’s a mother. And has one of the best laughs we’ve ever heard. She’s 100% authentic, which is one of the reasons she’s so likeable. And through her campaigning for more body positivity, inclusivity, and diversity in the beauty and fashion industry, Ashley has changed the lives of millions of women around the world (her mother predicted she’d do this as you’ll discover in this episode). In this conversation you’ll hear about the perfect leather pants, about how Gen Z is taking over the world, how to tackle the ‘nos’ in our lives, and so much more. Listen to the episode here.
5. Pandora Sykes on Navigating Contemporary Chaos
Pandora is a British writer and podcaster. If you’re one of the millions of women who tuned in each week to listen to The High Low Podcast, which she co-hosted with Dolly Alderton, you’ll know her well (and probably, like us, you greatly miss the show). But as we speak about in this episode, closing one career chapter no matter how wonderful, exciting and rewarding it was, will enviably open you up to new chapters that perhaps you weren’t expecting. Pandora’s latest book How Do We Know We're Doing It Right? explores how to navigate our contemporary chaos. She says that this isn’t a book of answers, it’s a book of questions. Questions such as what does doing it right even look like? And why do so many women feel like they're getting it wrong? Listen to the episode here.
