This summer, the AllBright team got bigger! We welcomed 3 new members to our board to help support AllBright’s evolution and growth. We had the pleasure of sitting down with new AllBright board member, brand and commerce innovator, Jennifer Roebuck to talk all things squiggly careers, ambition and well-being.
A little intro
I am a curious, high-energy, entrepreneurial leader who loves to create new consumer experiences. After 25 years of navigating the intersection of consumer, tech and creativity - I’m still fighting the good fight!
Can you tell us a bit about your career journey?
My career looks linear to most but it’s been choppy and challenging. I’m a creative at heart with a technical mind - this has been a challenge since most organizations like to put people in boxes and I don’t fit in one.
I’ve always been ambitious, so I took some risks and joined organizations that needed extreme transformation or cold-start building and that experience has served me well.
I started my career in marketing in Silicon Valley, shifted to e-commerce management halfway through and then merged the two disciplines into a modern CMO function that I still enjoy. I also helped start two companies - one successful restaurant chain and one failed mobile app. I learned more from the failure than all my successes combined.
What's been your career highlight?
I don’t think I’ve had it yet.. I’ll let you know in 10 years!
How has networking and other women played a part in your career?
I’m an ambivert so networking is harder for me, I find I’m more comfortable in intimate settings. I think networking at the right events has been amazing! I’m grateful to have some true friends that I met at industry events and through client/agency relationships.
As far as women are concerned, I worked in fashion - it’s mostly women. Women have been great mentors and I’ve enjoyed mentoring women. That said, the challenge women face can also be from other women. This isn’t discussed as openly, however, it’s one of our biggest obstacles to ensuring women get a fair shot at the top table in corporate life. Men have each other's backs, why can’t women?
What excites you about AllBright?
AllBright excites me because it’s authentic and impactful. I see a lot of women’s membership-based communities advertised and it’s overwhelming. Which groups are actually making a difference? I’m sure many are but I like the proof AllBright brings to the table. When prestigious organizations like Google tell you AllBright made an impact on their female employee engagement - that’s hard to beat!
Here are some quick-fire questions:
What’s the one thing in your day you can’t miss?
Matcha latte (sometimes two!)
What’s something you do to look after your wellbeing?
A long run 4x per week.
What are you listening to/ reading/ watching right now?
OMG - How much time do you have? Listen - AllIn pod. Read - Status & Culture by David Marx. Watch - I don’t watch much, I mostly read. However, I just watched Blue Zones and enjoyed it!
What’s your life mantra?
90% of people’s actions have nothing to do with you.
What’s something that’s recently inspired you?
We have a lot of friends in the hospitality industry. Last week I went to a restaurant opening. It wasn’t their first restaurant (I think it’s their 7th) and yet the founder couldn’t be happier to be on that journey. I left feeling inspired by her passion for her business, team and the place radiates joy - which is just amazing!
