"What we've learned from 20 years of scientific research into how the menopause affects skin"

In partnership with Vichy Laboratories, we take a closer look at the skincare brand’s research into how the menopause can affect the skin.

From hot flushes to night sweats and headaches, there are numerous symptoms that can be experienced during menopause. Alongside these symptoms, women may also notice a change in their skin, such as a moisture loss that can make their skin feel dryer than usual.

If you’ve experienced a change in your skin due to menopause, then don’t worry: this is completely normal. Vichy Laboratories has spent the past 20 years conducting research into these changes in order to better understand why they can happen and, just as importantly, to develop a skincare range that can help your skin to counteract them.

With Neovadiol, a dedicated skincare range designed for menopause, Vichy Laboratories has long been a pioneer in this space and continues to be passionately committed to the wider conversation and movement. Vichy Laboratories has over two decades of dedicated scientific research and development into menopause diagnosis and education to help women feel better equipped for and supported in their experience. The brand also recently partnered with AllBright to run the Let’s Not Pause Ireland Summit, an important step forwards in reframing the conversation around this significant phase of women’s lives and breaking down the taboo that surrounds it.

Read on for a closer look at some of the findings from the research conducted by Vichy Laboratories.

How can the menopause affect the skin?

“Menopause is defined by a drop in the female hormone, oestrogen,” explains Marion Nielsen, a doctor in pharmacy and the Global Scientific Director of Vichy Laboratories. “Their levels begin to decline in perimenopause, to reach a very low level in post-menopause.”

So how can this shift in hormones impact the skin? “In the skin, their impact can be felt in every layer,” explains Marion. “Sebum production decreases and the epidermis becomes thinner, which alters the quality of the barrier function. Natural antioxidant defenses decrease. Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid synthesis slows down.”

How can skincare help to alleviate these changes?

“Vichy has developed real expertise on the visible impact of hormonal variations on the skin during menopause, with more than 20 studies on 1,200+ menopausal women,” says Marion.

In the brand’s latest research, 88% of women agreed that their skin felt nourished after three months of using Neovadial skincare.

What products are best for menopausal skin?

Vichy’s Neovadiol range contains various products dedicated to menopausal skin. Every product in the range is dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic.

What products are best for perimenopausal and menopausal skin?

The hormonal shifts associated with perimenopause and menopause can also lead to changes in the skin. For this reason, Vichy has recently added three new products to the Neovadiol range, specifically formulated for perimenopausal and menopausal skin.

The products are formulated with hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated and plump, and volcanic mineralising water, which is rich in 15 essential minerals and can work to improve the skin’s natural defence system. The products also contain Proxyland+ Cassia seed extract, which the brand describes as a “unique duo that plump and firm the skin, wrinkles are less pronounced and radiance is restored”.
